ABSTRACT: During the years 2001 and 2002, four experiments were conducted in the winter season, under irrigation and in the raining season in the experimental area of the Embrapa Cerrados Research Center at Planaltina, Federal District. The objective was to identify cultivars that presented the following characteristics: resistance to diseases, high yeld, resistance to lodging, desirable plant height and good market acceptance, to be indicated for cultivation in the Federal District. It was concluded that the cultivar BRS Supremo is indicated for this region, due to its high yield characteristics, erect type, resistance to diseases and lodging, as well as its excellent cooking qualities. |

ABSTRACT: During the winter seasons of 1997 and 1998, experiments were conducted under irrigation in the experimental area of Embrapa Cerrados Research Center at Planaltina, Federal District and in the experimental area of the Piratininga Region Agricultural Cooperative (Coopertinga), Northwest of Minas Gerais State. The objective was to identify cultivars that present the following characteristics; resistance to diseases, early maturity, high yeld, resistance to lodging, desirable plant height and good market acceptance, to be indicated for cultivation in the Federal District and the Northewest of Minas Gerais State. It was concluded that the cultivar BRS Valente is indicated for these regions, due to its high yield characteristics, erect type, resistance... |

The present study identifies quantitative trait loci (QTLs) in response to an experimental infection with the parasite responsible for bonamiosis, Bonamia ostreae, in two segregating families of the European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. We first constructed a genetic-linkage map for each studied family and improved the existing genetic-linkage map for the European flat oyster with a set of SNP markers. This latter map now combines the best accuracy and the best estimate of the genome coverage available for an oyster species. Secondly, by comparing the QTLs detected in this study with those previously published for O. edulis in similar experimental conditions, we identified several potential QTLs that were identical between the different families, and also... |

We have identified quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) for resistance to Bonamia ostreae, a parasite responsible for the dramatic reduction in the aquaculture of this species. An F-2 family from a cross between a wild oyster and an individual from a family selected for resistance to bonamiosis was cultured with wild oysters injected with the parasite, leading to 20% cumulative mortality. Selective genotyping of 92 out of a total of 550 F-2 progeny (i.e., 46 heavily infected oysters that died and 46 parasite-free oysters that survived) was performed using 20 microsatellites and 34 amplification fragment length polymorphism primer pairs. Both a two-stage testing strategy and QTL interval mapping methods were used. The two-stage... |

This article summarizes a study of consumers' willingness to pay (WTP), in urban areas in Tennessee, Mississippi, and Michigan, for a powdery mildew resistant dogwood tree. Powdery mildew is a disease affecting flowering dogwoods that can limit growth, detract from the appearance, and may cause plant decline and death. Study objectives were to provide information about consumers' WTP and to identify potential marketing strategies for the introduction of the disease-resistant tree. On average, survey respondents indicated they are willing to pay a $13.35 premium for a flowering dogwood tree which is resistant to powdery mildew. Regression results led to inferences that the presence of dogwoods in a respondent's yard, presence of dogwoods infected with... |
